Privacy Policy

SpeakO is a speaking-only English learning app built for Indian beginners. This policy explains what personal data we collect when you use the SpeakO app or this website, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices and rights you have — including how to delete your account and data.

1. Who we are

SpeakO is developed and operated by QUHU MEDIA LLP ("QUHU", "SpeakO", "we", "us", or "our"), a company registered in India. For the purposes of India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 ("DPDP Act") and other applicable data protection laws, QUHU MEDIA LLP is the data fiduciary responsible for the personal data described in this policy.

2. Scope of this policy

This policy applies to personal data we collect through the SpeakO mobile application, this website (speakoapp.com), and any related support communications. It does not apply to third-party websites, apps, or services that SpeakO may link to, including the payment, analytics, and messaging providers listed in Section 5 — their own privacy policies govern how they handle data.

3. Information we collect

3.1 Account and profile information

When you sign up, we collect your mobile phone number (used to send a one-time password for login), and profile details you choose to provide, such as your name, your preferred learning language (e.g. Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, or English), your state, and your learning goals.

3.2 Voice and speech data

SpeakO's core exercises ask you to speak English out loud. When you record yourself in an exercise, that audio is sent securely to our speech-processing partner to generate a pronunciation score and, where relevant, a text transcript. We retain recordings only as long as needed to score your attempt, support app functionality (such as letting you review a past attempt), and improve accuracy for Indian-accented English — we do not use your voice recordings for anything beyond delivering and improving the SpeakO product. Raw audio and transcripts are never included in our operational debug logs.

If you use a premium conversational feature (such as chatting with our AI tutor character), the text of your messages is sent to our AI language-model and voice-synthesis providers in real time to generate a spoken reply. These conversations are rate-limited and gated to paying subscribers.

3.3 Learning and usage data

We collect data about how you use the app: lessons and games completed, scores, streaks, session length, in-app purchases, and progress through the curriculum. We use this to build your private Confidence Report and to personalize what we show you next.

3.4 Payment information

If you subscribe to SpeakO, your payment is processed by Razorpay (for UPI/India payment methods) or Stripe (where applicable). We receive confirmation that a payment succeeded, along with limited billing metadata (such as plan, amount, and status) — we do not receive or store your full card number, UPI PIN, or bank credentials; those are handled directly by our PCI-DSS-compliant payment processors.

3.5 Device and technical information

We automatically collect technical data such as device model, operating system and app version, a push-notification token, approximate location derived from your IP address, and basic diagnostic/crash data.

3.6 Communications

If you email us or contact support, we keep a record of that correspondence so we can respond and improve our support.

4. How we use your information

• To create and secure your account, and verify your phone number via one-time password
• To deliver lessons, score your pronunciation, and personalize the curriculum to your level and goals
• To process subscription payments and manage billing, trials, and renewals
• To send reminders, streak notifications, and service updates (push, and where you've opted in, WhatsApp)
• To measure and improve the app, including aggregated, de-identified product analytics
• To detect, prevent, and investigate fraud, abuse, or violations of our terms
• To comply with legal obligations and respond to lawful requests
• To respond to your support requests

Where the DPDP Act or another applicable law requires your consent for a specific use (for example, sending you WhatsApp messages), we rely on that consent and you may withdraw it at any time as described in Section 8.

5. How we share your information

We do not sell your personal data. We share it only with service providers who process it on our behalf, under contractual confidentiality and security obligations, strictly to operate SpeakO:

We may also disclose information if required by law, to enforce our terms, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of SpeakO, our users, or others — and as part of any merger, acquisition, or asset sale, subject to this policy continuing to apply to your data.

6. International data transfers

SpeakO's infrastructure is currently hosted with our cloud provider in Singapore. This means your data may be processed and stored outside India. Where the DPDP Act or other applicable law requires it, we take steps to safeguard cross-border transfers, including encryption in transit and at rest and contractual protections with our infrastructure providers.

7. Data retention

We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active and as necessary to provide the SpeakO service, comply with our legal and accounting obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. When you delete your account (Section 8), we anonymize or delete your personal data within a reasonable period, except where we are legally required to retain certain records (for example, billing records for tax purposes).

8. Your rights and choices

Subject to applicable law, including the DPDP Act, you have the right to:

• Access the personal data we hold about you
• Correct inaccurate or incomplete data, most of which you can edit directly in the app
• Delete your account and associated personal data, in-app under Settings, or by emailing us — deleting your account soft-deletes and anonymizes your profile and purges data we are not legally required to retain
• Withdraw consent for optional processing, such as WhatsApp messaging, at any time without affecting the lawfulness of processing carried out before withdrawal
• Grievance redressal — contact our Grievance Officer (Section 14) with any complaint; we aim to acknowledge and resolve grievances within the timelines required by applicable law

9. Leaderboards and public information

SpeakO shows state and India-wide leaderboards to encourage practice. These display your chosen display name and relative rank to other learners; we do not display your phone number, exact location, or private learning content on any leaderboard.

10. Children's privacy

SpeakO is intended for general audiences and is not directed at children under 18. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children without the consent of a parent or guardian as required by applicable law. If you believe a child has provided us personal data without appropriate consent, please contact us and we will take steps to delete it.

11. Security

We use industry-standard safeguards to protect your data, including encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS) and at rest, access controls limiting who inside SpeakO can view personal data, and logging practices that exclude raw audio, transcripts, and other sensitive personal data from our operational logs. No system is perfectly secure, and we encourage you to keep your device and account credentials secure.

12. Cookies and similar technologies

This website uses only the technical storage necessary to remember your language preference. The SpeakO app uses device and analytics identifiers (Section 3.5) rather than browser cookies to recognize your device across sessions.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or legal requirements. We will update the "Last updated" date above, and for material changes, we will provide additional notice in the app or by email where required by law.
